mct[01/24/07 9:12 PM ]: For tonight, we want to try to keep cross chat to a minimum, so please post your questions over in the comments section of this link:

mct[01/24/07 9:12 PM ]: http://www.motoringfun.com/2007/01/23/phil-wicks-chat-wednesday-9pm-est/

mct[01/24/07 9:13 PM ]: Ok – enough of all that… letís get started!

mct[01/24/07 9:13 PM ]: It is my pleasure to introduce a well-known personality in the MINI world…

mct[01/24/07 9:13 PM ]: Someone who loves MINIs so much that he has his own MINI Driving Academy and MINI racing series…

mct[01/24/07 9:13 PM ]: And who actually was a stunt driver in the Original Italian Job movie – Phil Wicks!

mct[01/24/07 9:13 PM ]: Welcome Phil

magic_mini[01/24/07 9:14 PM ]: welcome phil

MNEEME[01/24/07 9:14 PM ]: Welcome Phil!

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:14 PM ]: Good evening

Coloradomini[01/24/07 9:14 PM ]: hello phil

murmini[01/24/07 9:14 PM ]: Hi Phil…

bignorm[01/24/07 9:14 PM ]: hello all

public_school_boy[01/24/07 9:14 PM ]: HI Phil

mct[01/24/07 9:14 PM ]: So Phil, for those who are new to the MINI world or who may not know you, can you give us a quick synopsis of how you got involved with MINIs and describe your MINI Driving Academy?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:15 PM ]: I started developing and racing Minis in England in 1959 with the originial 850 Minis

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:15 PM ]: I raced successfully with the 850 Mini, then the first Mini Cooper 997

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:16 PM ]: Then started racing Internationally.

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:16 PM ]: Then I was fortunate enough to get sponsorship and a works supported drive in the first Cooper S 1071 cc

mct[01/24/07 9:16 PM ]: nice

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:16 PM ]: When the new MINI came out, I knew it was my chance to continue doing something I had started 45 years ago and my wife and I started the Phil Wicks Driving Academy with the assistance of MINI USA

mct[01/24/07 9:17 PM ]: so they helped you start it?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:18 PM ]: MINI USA encouraged us to start the academy and provided us a car in the 2nd year.

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:17 PM ]: More recently in 2006, with the cooperation and advice of the MINI UK Challenge, we started the North American MINI Cooper Championship Race Series

mct[01/24/07 9:17 PM ]: Again, for those who donít know… can you tell us about the North American MINI Challenge (ie. what is it and how can people get involved)?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:18 PM ]: It is a race series of 6 classes of cars — from showroom stock to unlimited modifications

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:19 PM ]: You have to have a racing license which you can earn through the Phil Wicks Racing School

mct[01/24/07 9:19 PM ]: so what are the minimum safety requirements?

mct[01/24/07 9:20 PM ]: like can we take or daily drivers?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:20 PM ]: The race series will be in two divisions this year with 8 races in the west and 8 in the east and run offs at Hallett in October

mct[01/24/07 9:20 PM ]: nice…

mct[01/24/07 9:21 PM ]: so showroomstock is what?

mct[01/24/07 9:21 PM ]: basic stock car with rollcage?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:21 PM ]: Safety requirements are roll cage, 5-6 point seat belt, fire extinguisher, nomex suits, electronic cut-off all of which is on our website www.minidriving.com

mct[01/24/07 9:21 PM ]: great

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:21 PM ]: If your daily drives comply with the safety requirements, bring them on!

Gromit801[01/24/07 9:22 PM ]: Whatís necessary for just the driving school?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:23 PM ]: The driving school requires your own car — any make or model (no SUVs Mini Vans or Trucks)

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:23 PM ]: And a helmet — Snell 95 or newer

mct[01/24/07 9:21 PM ]: I understand you have a new series sponsor – Alta Mini Performance?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:22 PM ]: We have several new sponsors — Alta, Hendricks Motorsports, My MINI (soon to be know as MinSpeed, Kumho Tires, Way Motorworks

mct[01/24/07 9:23 PM ]: great!

mct[01/24/07 9:23 PM ]: Ok – we will now open the floor to questions that have been posted in the comments section of the Phil Wicks Chat post located at:

mct[01/24/07 9:23 PM ]: http://www.motoringfun.com/2007/01/23/phil-wicks-chat-wednesday-9pm-est/

mct[01/24/07 9:23 PM ]: we will ask the questions in order….

mct[01/24/07 9:23 PM ]: so make sure you get your questions posted there:

mct[01/24/07 9:23 PM ]: http://www.motoringfun.com/2007/01/23/phil-wicks-chat-wednesday-9pm-est/

Catastrophe[01/24/07 9:24 PM ]: How strick are the tech requirments for the car?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:24 PM ]: Very!

mct[01/24/07 9:24 PM ]: I will type the questions here and let Phil answer them. If it is your question, feel free to ask a follow-up if you need to (try to keep it on the same topic

Catastrophe[01/24/07 9:24 PM ]: Surface rust is a problem I would assume then?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:25 PM ]: As long as the car can cast a shadow, then it is okay!

mct[01/24/07 9:25 PM ]: we will let cata finish and then continue to the question queue….

mct[01/24/07 9:25 PM ]: ok here we go….

mct[01/24/07 9:25 PM ]: First question comes from Drew:

mct[01/24/07 9:25 PM ]: Hi Phil, Iíd just like to know what driving school is like. For example, how to sign up, and where do they take place. Is there an age regulation? or MINImum driver skill requirement?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:27 PM ]: All the registration information is on our website www.minidriving.com. The age requirement is the legal driving age either with permit or license. We do have a Teen Safe Driving Academy as well. Our events are all over the country from Florida to California. The schedule is on the website.

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:27 PM ]: There is no minimum driver skill requirement. 60% of our participants are basic novices.

mct[01/24/07 9:27 PM ]: Ok next we have alpinamike asking:

mct[01/24/07 9:27 PM ]: Hello Phil, Correct me if I am wrong but I heard you drove the Original Mini in the Orginal I.Job.. Can you tell us a little bit about what went on and how you and the

mct[01/24/07 9:27 PM ]: hollywood types ie..Michael Chaine got along? How much driving did you do? How do you feel about the New Italian Job Movie driving stunts?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:28 PM ]: Yes, I did drive an original Mini (the red one). Michael Caine and I were friends from the past, living near each other in London. So we got along just fine. In fact, I met my wife through Michael 11 years ago.

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:29 PM ]: I drove in England and Ireland and instructed stunt drivers. I like the old Italian Job better, of course!

mct[01/24/07 9:29 PM ]: LOL

alpinamike[01/24/07 9:29 PM ]: I knew it, its a MINI small world!

mct[01/24/07 9:29 PM ]: Next we have Magic_MINI asking:

mct[01/24/07 9:30 PM ]: Hello Phil, Do you plan on ever coming back to Barbers Motorsport park in Alabama.

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:31 PM ]: Not in the near future. We do have an event scheduled at Talladega Gran Prix track which has been reconfigured this year and is better for MINIs.

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:31 PM ]: I do occasionally instruct superbikes at Barber if you have a motorcycle!

mct[01/24/07 9:31 PM ]: nice

mct[01/24/07 9:31 PM ]: magic ? any follow-up?

mct[01/24/07 9:31 PM ]: on same topic?

magic_mini[01/24/07 9:32 PM ]: I have been on Barbers and love it but would love to have somone that know about he MINI to help me

mct[01/24/07 9:32 PM ]: Zyamfier asks:

mct[01/24/07 9:32 PM ]: Phil, I have heard that the NAMCC will be split between East and West Coast this year. If this is true will there be more tracks added? I have a suggestion if you are looking for a new track in

mct[01/24/07 9:32 PM ]: the Middle of the US (Nebraska) http://www.racemph.com/ Great new track just built last year.

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:33 PM ]: Yes, we are in two divisions with 8 races in the East and 8 races in the West. The schedule has been set. Our run offs are scheduled for Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Tulsa OK in October.

mct[01/24/07 9:34 PM ]: Zya? any follow-ups?

Zyamfier[01/24/07 9:34 PM ]: I will be trying to attend an event in my area with my trackday trailer. Look for me http://www.northamericanmotoring.com/gallery
/data/1138/medium/Dragon_prep.JPG

Zyamfier[01/24/07 9:34 PM ]: nothing else

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:34 PM ]: OKAY!

mct[01/24/07 9:34 PM ]: nice trailer!!

mct[01/24/07 9:34 PM ]: Brian asks:

mct[01/24/07 9:35 PM ]: Hi Phil, I was wondering what the differences are between your driving school and some of the others I see posted on the web. PWMDA is a bit of a hike for me. Is it for novices? Iíve never been and Iím a bit nervous about taking my new MINI on the track!!

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:35 PM ]: You get classroom and in-car tuition in our school. You are never allowed to exceed your 80% ability.

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:36 PM ]: Most of our participants are novices — about 60%

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:36 PM ]: This is not a racing school, it is to make you a safer and better driver on the street. Your new MINI will be quite safe if you follow the rules.

mct[01/24/07 9:36 PM ]: phil – how does insurance work if you get into a wreck on the track?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:37 PM ]: One of the biggest differences between us and other schools is that we are a specifically MINI Cooper Driving Academy (although we do allow other makes and models of cars space permitting.)

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:37 PM ]: And I am one of the worldís foremost authorities on Minis and MINIs

mct[01/24/07 9:38 PM ]: phil – how does insurance work if you get into a wreck on the track?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:38 PM ]: We carry a $5 million policy which insures for any damage you do to the track, its facilities, and its employees. Your insurance covers damage to your car. Check with your insurance company first.

mct[01/24/07 9:39 PM ]: good point…

mct[01/24/07 9:39 PM ]: Brian? any follow-up?

blissfull[01/24/07 9:39 PM ]: wow insurance fr races in track

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:39 PM ]: This is not racing or a racing school and is a driver improvement course and every student receives a certificate of completion that you can offer to your insurance company for the possiblity of better rates.

blissfull[01/24/07 9:39 PM ]: what does the premium cost?

murmini[01/24/07 9:40 PM ]: your insurance may actually give you a discount for taking Philís course !

mct[01/24/07 9:40 PM ]: no blissfull – not race insurance – that is different

blissfull[01/24/07 9:40 PM ]: where is this course provided

mct[01/24/07 9:40 PM ]: ìAflak For the Trackî is a whole other story…

blissfull[01/24/07 9:40 PM ]: oh ok

mct[01/24/07 9:41 PM ]: i will try to get info on insurance to cover ìtrackî events and post in show notes…

Will[01/24/07 9:41 PM ]: i need that!

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:41 PM ]: The course is provided all over the United States. The schedule is posted on our website. It starts in Las Vegas on March 23.

mct[01/24/07 9:41 PM ]: just a reminder – post your questions in the following link:

mct[01/24/07 9:41 PM ]: http://www.motoringfun.com/2007/01/23/phil-wicks-chat-wednesday-9pm-est/

mct[01/24/07 9:41 PM ]: ok Ben asks:

mct[01/24/07 9:42 PM ]: do you do any events in the WI area? thanks

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:43 PM ]: No, we have nothing scheduled in Wisconsin. Hallett in Oklahoma may be your closest event. Check the schedule on our website.

mct[01/24/07 9:43 PM ]: Ben also wants to know – What do you think of the R56?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:44 PM ]: I have not personally driven one, but our motoring journalist friends in Europe told me it is an improvement.

mct[01/24/07 9:44 PM ]: Ben? follow-ups?

bestever[01/24/07 9:45 PM ]: cool cant wait

bestever[01/24/07 9:45 PM ]: nothing more

mct[01/24/07 9:45 PM ]:

mct[01/24/07 9:45 PM ]: one more month…

mct[01/24/07 9:45 PM ]: ok Magic_MINI asks:

mct[01/24/07 9:46 PM ]: If there was no MINI what would you drive?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:47 PM ]: Weather-permitting, my Honda motorcycles!

mct[01/24/07 9:47 PM ]: LOL

mct[01/24/07 9:47 PM ]: ok Magic_MINI also asks:

mct[01/24/07 9:47 PM ]: What do you think is the best track to race on?

magic_mini[01/24/07 9:47 PM ]: I forgot youíre into Motorcycles too.

public_school_boy[01/24/07 9:47 PM ]: Now thatís a counterfeit MINI

mct[01/24/07 9:47 PM ]: LOL

magic_mini[01/24/07 9:48 PM ]: or to do your school on.

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:49 PM ]: The Nurburgring in Germany. But in America, there are severalsuch as Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershas SC, Sebring FL., Buttonwillow, Spring Mountain. All of these are tracks we have scheduled this year and all tracks we run the school and race series on are drivers tracks.

mct[01/24/07 9:49 PM ]: magic? follow-ups?

magic_mini[01/24/07 9:50 PM ]: I know someone with a MIni that has been on the Nuburgring.

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:50 PM ]: Me, too. Go to the website to see a photo of me in 1965 in the classic Mini.

magic_mini[01/24/07 9:50 PM ]: No more . next

mct[01/24/07 9:50 PM ]: thank you!

mct[01/24/07 9:50 PM ]: Catastrophe asks:

mct[01/24/07 9:50 PM ]: For all of us wrench heads, do you have any ìpit crewî, so to speak, training

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:51 PM ]: No. But Waylen Hunsucker will be glad to give advice.

mct[01/24/07 9:51 PM ]: cata? follow-ups?

magic_mini[01/24/07 9:51 PM ]: I will check it out.

Catastrophe[01/24/07 9:51 PM ]: Only to say: You should!!!

mct[01/24/07 9:52 PM ]: LOL

RandyBMC[01/24/07 9:52 PM ]: Iíd be glad to help cata lol

mct[01/24/07 9:52 PM ]: thanks cata!

mct[01/24/07 9:52 PM ]: ok – next – RandyBMC asks:

mct[01/24/07 9:52 PM ]: How many cars are scheduled for Vegasí race?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:53 PM ]: The new race pages and forms just went up on the web so we expect the entries to come in very soon.

mct[01/24/07 9:53 PM ]: also – How are the points going to work for the west and east? Is there going to be a ìRunoffsî east meets west?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:54 PM ]: Go to the website. The points are listed and the run-offs for double points will be at Hallett in October.

mct[01/24/07 9:55 PM ]: randy? any follow-up?

RandyBMC[01/24/07 9:55 PM ]: Yeah – so are the points split from the east and the west, evenly? And, do you have any idea of how many entrants in Vegas?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:57 PM ]: Points are awarded for each race in each division. The racer can select four best finishes including the run-offs. The winner of the championship will be determined at Hallett and will go to England to participate in a MINI UK Challenge Race. We expect about 15-20 racers in Vegas

RandyBMC[01/24/07 9:57 PM ]: Wow – 15 is a lot!

RandyBMC[01/24/07 9:58 PM ]: I cant make it this year

RandyBMC[01/24/07 9:58 PM ]: Thanks for the follow ups!

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:58 PM ]: Youíre welcome.

mct[01/24/07 9:58 PM ]: Ok next we have alpinamike asking:

mct[01/24/07 9:58 PM ]: Sine you have a bike backgound, What is your favorite bike?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 9:59 PM ]: I prefer Honda sportbikes. I currently have an SP1 (RC 51), a Joey Dunlop Isle of Mann TT replica, and a CBR 600.

mct[01/24/07 10:00 PM ]: wow – nice

mct[01/24/07 10:00 PM ]: mike?

alpinamike[01/24/07 10:00 PM ]: You might know the famous BMW Sabine driver from the Nurberg Ring, have you even driven with her?

alpinamike[01/24/07 10:00 PM ]: very cooll SP1

Racerwicks[01/24/07 10:00 PM ]: No, I havenít

mct[01/24/07 10:01 PM ]: all set mike?

alpinamike[01/24/07 10:01 PM ]: Have you seen here drive that ring?

bestever[01/24/07 10:01 PM ]: go mini go

Racerwicks[01/24/07 10:01 PM ]: No.

alpinamike[01/24/07 10:02 PM ]: thanks Phil

mct[01/24/07 10:01 PM ]: ok – time is runing out – and we have 2 more questions…

mct[01/24/07 10:01 PM ]: Vics44 asks:

mct[01/24/07 10:02 PM ]: Just got my 07 MCSC CR with JCW air filter and airwings with JCW HD brakes. It is a selectronic. My question. What speeds do you recommend during the breakin period and what is your estimate of the breakin mileage on the engine?

GotMINI[01/24/07 10:02 PM ]: I get the distinct feeling Phil would rather be the one driving the ëRing.

Racerwicks[01/24/07 10:03 PM ]: Rather than speed, watch the RPMs during break-in — no more than 3,000 RPMs. But most important, do not driver continuously at any level RPM. The break-in mileage is 2,000 miles for the engine.

mct[01/24/07 10:04 PM ]: vics? follow-ups?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 10:04 PM ]: And yes, I would LOVE to drive the Ring again.

vics44[01/24/07 10:04 PM ]: Yeah, I put it around 4000 rpm a few times, will that hurt it?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 10:05 PM ]: Not in short bursts.

Racerwicks[01/24/07 10:05 PM ]: If you do that, take your foot of the gas and let the RPMs drop naturally.

vics44[01/24/07 10:05 PM ]: Good, appreciate the info!

mct[01/24/07 10:05 PM ]: ok thanks vic!

mct[01/24/07 10:04 PM ]: ok we have one last question.

mct[01/24/07 10:05 PM ]: now – Brian asks:

mct[01/24/07 10:05 PM ]: Hi Phil. Is the TV coverage of the MINI series going to continue? How and where can I catch the races on TV!

mct[01/24/07 10:06 PM ]: I want to know about this too!!!

mct[01/24/07 10:06 PM ]:

magic_mini[01/24/07 10:06 PM ]: YES TV!!

Racerwicks[01/24/07 10:07 PM ]: Thought you would never ask, Brian! Yes, the 2007 race series will be televised on MavTV, produced by Chet Burks Productions. Go to MavTv.com for the schedule.

MNEEME[01/24/07 10:07 PM ]: http://www.MavTv.com

mct[01/24/07 10:07 PM ]: ok – now the obvious question

mct[01/24/07 10:08 PM ]: any other network???

mct[01/24/07 10:08 PM ]: for the 98% of us who do not get MavTV?

magic_mini[01/24/07 10:08 PM ]: Hey what about a DVD of the 2007 race season!!!!

public_school_boy[01/24/07 10:08 PM ]: Iíd buy one.

mct[01/24/07 10:08 PM ]: for example – any plans to post the videos online of the races?

Racerwicks[01/24/07 10:08 PM ]: Possible Speed at a later date. MavTV is on DirectTV soon.
