Review: Minspeed JCW Resonator Eliminator

I have now been driving around with the JCW exhaust equipped with the MyMini/Minspeed resonator eliminator for a month and feel I can now give a true assessment of this mod. For those that missed it, check out the MyMini Winter Dyno Day posts (see links below) for information on my installation.

The resonator eliminator gives the JCW exhaust a deeper and throatier sound. It is louder than stock, but ONLY when you get on the gas. I find that the burble is much more pronounced and louder. If you are one of those MINI owners that hates the burble (or ìback-firingî as some call it), than this mod (or most any exhaust mod for that matter) is not for you. I have found a way to control the burble, however. If you keep the revs consistent while shifting (ie. matching revs), you can actually suppress the burble for the most part. If you want more burble, simply press the gas a bit and let off completely. It really is quite a bit of fun playing with this aspect of the exhaust and enhances the motoring experience.

Driving on the interstate at speed is surprisingly pleasant. The sound inside the cabin is VERY close to stock at cruise. I was told by some to expect a bit of drone, but I can honestly say it just is not there. If I could change one thing about it, however, it would be the cold start tone. Since the resonator is no longer in place, the steel pipe is susceptible to a tinny sound if you get on the gas hard during the first couple of minutes of engine ignition. It takes a couple of minutes for the pipe to heat up for the tinny sound to go away. If you donít get on the gas hard right away (which you should not do anyway), this is not an issue. The burble on a cold start is more of a ìsnapî or ìcrackleî which may annoy some. If it bothers you, try matching revs when shifting and you wonít have a problem. Again, this is only for the first couple of minutes after you start your car cold. Not a huge issue, but one that I feel you should know before buying it.

Installation went very well and straightforward. Pete at MyMini/Minspeed did a great job making these parts fit the JCW exhaust. The unit simply slips into the rear section of the exhaust and clamps on.

Overall, I am very pleased with the MyMini/Minspeed resonator eliminator and the sound enhancement it has made to my MINI. While I do not think there was any power gain from this mod, the deeper and throatier sound that is produced is well worth the price of $135.
