WTCC Game: Race 07 Featuring MINI Challenge

Ok I think I found the game that I posted about two days ago. Can’t be positive, but this game, Race 07, looks AMAZING. The game features:

“The full 2007 and 2006 seasons of the WTCC, the historic WTCCí87 class, Formula 3000, Formula BMW, the Mini Cooper Challenge, the Radical SR3 and SR4 (in various configurations), as well as the Caterham CSR200, CSR260 and CSR320 Concept”.

With what looks like amazing graphics, 300 cars and 32 tracks – this game has my attention. They have a demo you can download and play (even has multiplayer enabled in the demo) which I plan on doing as soon as I finish posting this. From what it looks like, the game was sent to stores last week, but I have not found any store with it in stock except for ebgames.com. Make sure you check out the trailers below and the links at the bottom of this post to check out some pretty sweet screen shots. If this game is anywhere near what I expect, I think we may have to start up a MotoringFun.com virtual MINI Challenge series!! Who’s with me?!?!

Video: Virtual MINI Cooper Challenge

Ok I need some help. I found this video online and am VERY interested to find the game it was captured from. If you have any insight into this, please post it in the comments. The game looks like a hoot to play. By the way – the video does require the DivX plug in to watch. If you are using Firefox it should be a simple click and go install. (Click HERE for the video).

Video: MINI Clubman Review

Fifth Gear is at it again with another review of the MINI. This time they tackle the MINI Clubman. I have to agree with Johnny on several points. First off – why the heck is the car badged with a Cooper name?? A MINI Cooper is a specific model (so I thought). And where does it say Clubman on the vehicle?? Sorry but that just bothers me. Also, the start/stop function seems to be a joke. I guess technically my 1979 Datsun 210 was WAY ahead of its time because it did the same thing when I came up to a stop light! I still can’t wait to test drive one to get a first-hand account of the car, but it almost seems that the MINI SUV/SAV may be a better fit for someone looking for more room, making the Clubman kind of pointless. I guess until I drive both I will have to keep an open mind.

BMW Building Two New Distribution Centers In The US

If you live in the Northeast or the Midwest, this press release is good news for you. BMW plans to build two new distribution facilities in Lower Nazareth, Pennsylvania and in Minooka, Illinois to better serve the 275 surrounding dealers. That means if you need a part for your MINI, chances are the turn around time should go down if the part is located locally rather than having to ship it from one of the other centers further away. This also shows the growth BMW is experiencing and expecting.

BMW Press Release

Expansion of logistics capabilities to keep pace with record growth of vehicle sales.
Woodcliff Lake, NJ – October 10, 2007… BMW of North America, LLC (BMW NA) announced today that it will expand its distribution network in the eastern and central United States by building two new regional distribution centers. The facilities will be located in Lower Nazareth, Pennsylvania and in Minooka, Illinois. Together they will be serving 275 BMW and MINI dealers in the Northeast and Midwest.

Scooter’s New Shoes: Part 2

When we left our hero yesterday… (yeah, yeah – I know – I watched WAY too much 1970’s Batman growing up). Anyways… in part 1 of “Scooter’s New Shoes” we discussed the reason for the new shoes in the first place. While I hope you actually click the link to read part 1 if you missed it, in a nutshell, my daily drivers that I also used on the track were shot to “you know where” and I decided to mount some Toyo RA1’s (an R-comp tire) on my Enkei rims for track use only. So after searching dozens of wheel and tire sites and using Photoshop to see what each design might look like on Scooter, I finally decided on ASA’s 17 inch AR2 wheels and the Kumho Ecsta SPT’s in a 215/40/17 configuration (I really did like the wide-stanced 215/40/17 size of my Hankooks, so I figured why not get that size on the Kumho’s).

Scooter’s New Shoes: Part 1

Well after 2 track weeekends and 15,000 miles of daily driving, my Hankook Rs2 Z212’s are finally shot. Last weekend driving up to Mickey & MINI 3 was the last trip they would see. Considering that I only expected to get 12,000 miles out of them – I am tickled to reach 15,000 miles without a problem! I must admit, however, towards the end there, the Hankook’s handled like crap. To be fair though, the tread was at the point that it did not pass the “penny test” so I really can’t complain. They served me well and handled like a dream when they still had some thickness to them!

Sooooo what now? Do I go out and pick up another set of Hankooks? Or do I take this opportunity to take my on-track traction to the next level? I did some research and spoke to many people who track their cars regularly and the logical choice that sits between a street tire like the Hankooks and a slick track tire like a set of Hoosiers is the Toyo RA1’s. The RA1’s are an R-compound tire, designed strictly for track use and seem to be the best choice for someone transitioning from a street tire. They are available with minimal tread or you can have a race shop shave them to enhance their dry traction performance (essentially making them *almost* slicks). I know what you are asking – why the heck would you shave OFF tread!?!? Doesn’t that shorten the life of the tire??? Well – not really. You see by shaving the tread, you are actually helping the tire heat up more evenly when on the track. Many individuals have noticed that by not shaving their RA1’s, they were only able to get 2-3 track weekends out of a set of tires. I am hoping to double that to 4-6 weekends by shaving mine. I will keep you posted on this of course!

MINI SUV Gets Green Light

Yes you did read that right – a MINI SUV! I have to admit – at first I thought it was ridiculous for MINI to come out with an SUV-type of vehicle. That is until I started thinking about my wife’s requirements for vehicles that she drives. Four doors is a must and this may be the only MINI that will sport four actual doors (not suicide doors, but REAL doors). So for someone who never could have considered a MINI before, this does bring some possibilities. Do I see the MINI enthusiast aspect declining as a result of all of these MINI variants? Possibly – which sucks for the MINI community, but to BMW it means some large coin as they will probably sell more cars than ever. I have already noticed a large number of new MINI owners who have purchased an R56 recently who have absolutely no interest in MINI events or clubs and who don’t even wave when waved to. The fact is that the new line of cars is appealing to new buyers who are buying these cars more for getting from point A to point B, rather than the community-aspect that once dominated the brand. Will there still be active clubs? Absolutely. We just may not see as many new members as we used to. Well now that I have gone completely on a tangent – let me bring it full circle and link to a cool early concept photo that shows what the vehicle may look like over at AutoExpress. What do you think?

Mickey Meets MINI

What started as a small MINI gathering at Walt Disney World back in 2005, has grown into quite the annual event attracting ìMiniacsî from as far as California, New York, and places in between. Mickey and MINI 3 in Orlando, Florida took place recently on the weekend of September 28-30, 2007 and played host to approximately 150 Mini enthusiasts from about 10 different states. Sunshine MINIs, the main Mini club in Florida that serves as the umbrella for various regional clubs across the state, hosted the weekendís festivities which included everything from a car show to morning and midnight runs through the still undeveloped back country of Orlando and top secret areas of Disney property that you never get to see.

Mickey & MINI 3 Photo Galleries

I finally was able to upload a few hundred photos of this past weekend’s Mickey & MINI 3 event (see links below the photo). I am still working on my weekend recap, but hope to have that posted in the next day or two. In the meantime, you may want to check out Ian’s GBMINI Blog and George’s JCWGP Blog for some great write-ups and even more photos. Of course check out the Sunshine MINIs forums for all the fun banter from the weekend and, yes, more photos! Enjoy!
