Wheel Cleaning: When Soap and Water Just Won’t Do

As many of you know, I am a bit meticulous when it comes to keeping my car clean. Dirty wheels, especially, bug me. Usually I am able to wipe away brake dust and dirt with just soap and water. However, if you have ever used a race brake pad before, you know how bad dust can cake onto a wheel, making it impossible to clean with just soap and water. For the record, I do not use race pads on the street for any long period of time. They pretty much stay on the car just long enough to get me to and from the track. When at the track, my street wheels come off and my track wheels go on so, exposure is limited to the harsh dust that is generated.

Still, the short time that my street wheels are exposed to dust from my Hawk HT-10’s, is enough to cause me to scrub the heck out of my wheels to get them clean. To make matters worse, if you let the dust sit on the wheels for longer than a week, you are in for quote a job.

Well, this was the situation I found myself in. My wheels were dirty (and yes they had some race pad dust on them) and they had sat for about 2 weeks. Soap and water were not cutting it so I asked Pete over at Minspeed for any suggestions. He recommended I give Wurth Wheel Cleaner a try. He said the stuff is amazing at getting wheels clean. Never steering my wrong in the past, I decided to trust Pete and give it a shot.

All I can say is WOW! After letting the wheel soak for a bit, the black brake dust finally came off. I was afraid I was going to have to live with the black stains on my rims, but they look brand new now! I highly recommend Wurth’s if you are having problems getting your rims clean – the stuff really works. Thanks Pete!

  1. A few tips, I use a product called Wheel wax which seems to make brake dust cleanup much easier. I don’t like using harsh cleaners on my BBS wheels since they’re painted similar to the body of the car.
