MTTS 2016: ROAD DEBRIS AND COWBOYS

The journey back from MTTS 2016 has not been as smooth as the actual MTTS event for us.  Apologies for the delay in posting the last couple of days of the actual event – Christian was wiped but he should have the post uploaded soon!

In the meantime, check out a note I sent to my family about what took place on Monday as we were trying to go visit them in Texas on the way home…

Today proved to be an interesting challenge on our journey back home… It started off great as we drove along the musical road on Route 66 and then headed towards Texas. As we were approaching the Texas border in Clovis, New Mexico, we ran over a chunk of concrete that was being tossed around on the not-so-well maintained Clovis roads. The impact ended up bending my 2 passenger side rims which resulted in both tires losing air pressure. Luckily there was no damage to the actual car other than the wheels/tires and thankfully there was a Day’s Inn across the street that I was able to pull into and set up a make shift triage pit stall for Clark.

The rear tire lost all air pressure in a matter of minutes but the front tire was able to keep about 15 pounds of pressure. With only 1 spare, my goal was to put my spare up front and move the less damaged wheel to the rear. Sounds easy right? Well one of the bolts on the rear wheel appeared damaged somehow which made it almost impossible to remove. After an hour of messing with it, I decided to call MINI Roadside assistance for a tow to the nearest Discount Tire. Only issue is that the tow would have to wait until 8am the next morning since Discount Tire was about to close. No problem – we were at a hotel right? LoL

Anyways, the tow was scheduled but then something amazing happened. I asked a hotel guest who was standing outside for assistance to see if he had any ideas on trying to get the lug loose in its current condition. He gave it a shot and quickly came to the same conclusion I made – that lug was messed up lol. He then told me he is staying with a friend who is a mechanic and has his tools!!! BOOM!!! His buddy George came out with some real tools (I was using the crappy lug wrench that came with the car jack Kit). After quite a bit of effort on his part, he finally was able to get the lug loose and I had 40 minutes to get to Discount Tire. So I put the less damaged wheel on the rear and filled it up as much as I could with my portable air compressor. We arrived at Discount Tire with about 20 minutes to spare and they worked on putting a new wheel on the rear and swapping one of the good tires to it.

We then decided to drive as far as Lubbock, Texas for the night (we are on our way to visit my parents in Round Rock, TX). When we got to our hotel (Staybridge Suites) we were given a room right away. This is where things get funny… We walk into our room only to find some cowboy boots on the counter and a real cowboy in bed watching TV!!! He looked at us with a puzzled face and yelled a few obscenities lol. We quickly left the room and went to report the situation to the front desk and had them assign us a different room!! Wow – what a way to top off an already weird day!!

Anyway…. We are ok and that’s what matters. Our travel plans were delayed a day, but we sure made some memories lol.

MTTS 2016: Day 0 – MINI Takes Florida

One of the official feeder events for MINI Takes The States 2016 kicked off earlier this week at Vista MINI in Coconut Creek, FL.  The event is called MINI Takes Florida (www.minitakesflorida.com) and it provides an exciting opportunity to motor with other MINIacs from MINI dealer to MINI dealer across the state for some good food and fun activities.

Today’s route took Christian and I meeting up with a few others at the West Palm Beach service plaza on Florida’s Turnpike where I ran into a family sporting some very nice superhero attire.  Naturally, we had to take a photo with Clark as the backdrop.

Our first stop of the day was at Orlando MINI where a very nice catered lunch awaited us.

We then motored over to MINI of Daytona Beach to check out that new dealership and have some dessert and more goodies.

Next we headed up to Jacksonville to stop at Tom Bush MINI for a nice, catered dinner, followed by indoor go-karting at Autobahn Indoor Speedway.

While we were in Jacksonville, a good friend of mine, Mike, purchased a 2004 MINI Cooper S MC40 special edition (number 486 out of 1,000).  We congratulate Mike and welcome him into the MINI family!!

Tomorrow we leave Jacksonville after a breakfast at Tom Bush MINI and head to Atlanta for the official kickoff of MINI Takes The States 2016!!

MINI JCW Team Gets More Power Heading to Canada

13076667_1538818653088073_8625499811280503313_nFinally, at long last, IMSA has approved a slight bump in maximum allowed power to the MINI JCW Team this week heading into this weekend’s race at Canadian Motorsports Park.  The new rules allow for a Maximum Boost Pressure of 2170 mbar Absolute (a 50 mbar increase from the previous 2120 mbar Absolute limit).  If you are wondering what that translates to in PSI, the MINIs will now be able to run a max boost of 31.5 PSI instead of the previous value of 30.7 PSI.  While it does not sound like much (and in reality it isn’t), the team will surely take what they can get to help even the playing field with the other cars that are putting out a bit more power.  Special thanks to Mike Bober from That MINI Show for sending this information in!

Video: Forza 6 – Sebring in a MINI JCW GP

A few of us in our local MINI club are trying to plan a track weekend at Sebring later this year.  To get some practice in, I hit the track in Forza 6.  Here is a quick 3 lap race at Sebring in a 2013 MINI John Cooper Works GP, recorded off Forza 6 on the Xbox One. The controller I used was the Thrustmaster TMX Force Feedback Steering Wheel and Pedals.  The GP’s horsepower in the game was upgraded slightly to just about 300hp due to some in-game mods ;).  Enjoy!

Clark At MINIs On The Dragon 2016

Last week I took Clark up for MINIs On The Dragon to join about 900 other MINIacs driving the mountain roads of North Carolina and Tennessee.  The previous MINIs On The Dragon events I attended were done in my previous 2006 MINI Cooper S, Scooter, so I was looking forward to bringing my 2016 F56 MINI up there for some comparison.  I have spent quite a bit of time working on setting up Clark to at least match the handling of Scooter and driving the Dragon (US 129) is a sure way to test the setup out.
